My older boys love crafting with me, but it’s sometimes difficult to come up with a project that they’re interested in AND that’s simple enough for them to help with.  This game combines both of those qualities, and it’s perfect to tuck into a backpack to take along on all of our summer adventures.

1. Trim one piece of brown felt to 8x8in and another to 8x10in.  Use pinking sheers on the end of the longer piece of brown felt.
2.  Trim four strips of light blue felt to .5inx8in.  Stitch in a grid on the smaller piece of brown felt. I let my boys (6 & 8) help with the sewing machine – they know which buttons to make it start and stop, and how to keep their hands back away from the needle.  I just give them a little help in making sure the fabric stays straight!
3. Pin the two pieces of brown felt together and stitch around the sides and bottom.
4. Have your kids use the squeeze punches on scrap paper.  You’ll use them as patterns for cutting your felt. I went ahead and cut the felt since I’m not quite comfortable with them using the very sharp MicroTip scissors.  They picked the color combinations for each set of markers. You’ll need 5 of one color set and 4 of the other.
5. Once you’ve cut out your shapes, layer them together and attach them with a brad.

6. Stitch a ribbon in place on the back of the flap of the longer piece of felt.  Sew a button over the top of it.
7. When the game isn’t being used, tuck the pieces into the pocket, fold it in half, and then wrap the ribbon around the button to close.
