My absolute favorite scrapbook indulgence is patterned paper.  I just can’t resist it!  The colors, the patterns, the textures – I love them all.  And as scrap supplies go, it’s a pretty inexpensive splurge.  I rarely use a full sheet of patterned paper on any of my projects, and as a result, I find myself with a full bin of scraps.  I knew I could pair those little bits of paper with my Fiskars tools to make a really fabulous accent for my page.

Instructions (Print version)

1. I started by cutting circles out of scrap paper in two different sizes, with two different tools.

2. I used the USX circles template and blade to cut a large circle, and the Large Round N Round Squeeze Punch to create a smaller circle. Once I had my circles, I folded them in half twice to find the center point, and then cut each of the circles into wedge shapes.

I cut the larger circle into five sections and the smaller one into four. I set these aside to use as patterns for my accent circles.

3. My next step was to dig through my scraps and find patterns and colors that complimented the patterned paper I’d chosen as a background for my page.  I ended up with a mix of some of many companies – Cosmo Cricket, American Crafts, Basic Grey and October Afternoon. I used the patterns that I created earlier to cut each of my circles into wedges. I grouped each side of wedge together to make it easier to piece my circles in the next step.

4. To create the pieced circles, I started by cutting another circle from scrap paper.  I added one wedge of patterned paper from each of the piles I’d created earlier.  Since I’d chosen seven different patterned papers, I ended up with seven finished circles. Since I only needed 4 for my layout, I saved the extras to use on cards and tags.

5. To finish the circles, I used the Large Seal of Approval Squeeze punch on a piece of blue patterned paper and layered it between the two sizes of pieced circles.  I tied string through a clear button and added it to the top of each circle.

6. I started my layout with yellow cardstock, and added a strip of fish patterned paper across the middle.  I used my Boundary Waters border punch along a strip of blue patterned paper and added it above the fish.  My main photo was printed as a 5x7, and I adhered it to the left side of the layout.  I stacked my accent circles next to the photo, and added 2 small photos to the right side.

7. I used a journaling spot under the small photos, and then cut another one apart and used it as an accent above and below the main photo – attaching all of them with maching stitching.

8. I added my title to the bottom left of the page. To finish the layout, I accented the main photo with one of my extra circles.
