pop up cards

I love pop-up cards! I like the creative paper engineering aspect of them and they give the recipient a fun surprise when they open one up. Here, I’ve created two pop-up cards with two different techniques. The first is a thank you card with a simple v-fold stand made of cardstock inside the card. This supports whatever paper shapes (or even stickers) you adhere to it and is the simpler of the two designs. The second is a birthday card where cuts in the card’s fold create table-like stands inside the card that can support embellished pieces to decorate the inside of the card.

Thank You Card Instructions:
1. Create a 5”w x 6”h card from white cardstock and round corners with Squeeze Punch.
2. Cut 5”w x 6”h piece of Dots-Green paper; round the two right corners and adhere to card front with solid side facing up.
3. Print/stamp letters (thank you in various languages) on white cardstock and Squeeze Punch with Medium Round ‘n Round; adhere across front of card as shown.
4. Cut ¾” x 5”w piece of Multi Stripe paper and adhere near bottom front of card.
5. For the v-fold stand, cut a piece of cardstock 3 ½”w x 4”h. Score the piece in half (1 ¾” midpoint), then score it again along the bottom ½” of the 4” height. Fold the scored lines. With the cardstock folded in half, trim the bottom corners off at an angle. This will create the tabs that will be adhered to the card.
6. Apply adhesive to the tabs and secure near the top of the card – lining up the fold of the card with the fold of the stand. Keep the v-fold stand near a 90 degree angle so that the cardstock will stand straight.
7. Squeeze Punch circles from patterned paper and pre-printed words on cardstock and adhere to the stand to embellish.
Birthday Card Instructions:
1. Create a 7”w x 5” high landscape card from light blue cardstock.
2. Create various shapes that you want as part of the pop-up. For this card, I created birthday shapes – cupcake, presents, party hat, sign – using Border Punches and Squeeze Punches.
Note: Keep the elements relatively flat to reduce the bulkiness of the card and take care to keep these pieces small enough to fit inside the card completely when it’s closed.
 3. To create the stands, first arrange where you want your shapes positioned -deciding on depth and height of where you want the decorative elements. With a pencil, mark the lines to cut (on the outside of the card) along the fold of the card.
4. Cut the shorter lines first, score across the 2 cut lines and fold. Then cut the deeper lines, score and fold these. Unfold the tabs and open the card.
5. With the card open, use your fingers to push the stands into the inside of the card to create the table-like stands. Now you can close the card and the stands will remain folded inside the card.
6. To create a stand on top of another stand (see the cupcake above the green gift box), close the card and from the outside cut lines in the top fold of a stand you’ve already created.
7. To create a stand to attach to one of the decorative elements (see the “it’s your day” sign in front of the yellow gift box), cut a small piece of paper (1”w x 2 ½”h) and fold in half from end to end (making it 1” x 1 ¼”). Then unfold and fold each end ¼” up to create small tabs. You can then adhere these tabs to the element and the bottom surface of the card.
8. Once all the stands are cut and folded inside the card, cut a 7 ½”w x 5 ½”h card from white cardstock. This will be the outside of the card and will cover up the cuts in the blue cardstock.
9. Apply adhesive to the outside of the blue card and adhere to the inside of the white card. Press firmly.
10. Now adhere each decorative element to a stand.
Note: Close the card on occasion to be sure everything is laying flat.
11. Add any additional embellishment to the background of the pop-up – Border Punch trim, etc.
12. Embellish the front of the card to complete.

Other suggestions: Go beyond the decorative aspect of the pop-up and make it functional as well. For example, create one to hold a gift card or photograph.
