If you love the look of vintage quilts, but don’t have the time to make one, you’ll love this project because it’s made with paper not fabric. That’s right, no sewing, and it was done in an afternoon!  Accurate Paper Piecing is a snap with Fiskars Desktop Rotary Trimmer and Metal Embellishments are no longer cumbersome with tools like Fiskars Embossing Plates and Paper Crimper. I didn’t begin with a pattern, but just created and layered as I went. As a result, a fun ‘accident’ occurred along the way, like the crackled paint effect, which happened when I painted over a dried white glue surface. This isn’t your grandmother’s way of quilting…but you’ll love the results all the same!

Instructions (Print version)

1. Adhere photo to middle of canvas.

2. Trim metal foil paper into 2 inch strips. Run through paper crimper, and adhere around photo as a frame.

3. Trim patterned papers into 2 inch strips. Then trim strips into 2 inch pieces. Glue  squares on to canvas beginning around outer edge first using sponge applicator. Continue adding squares until canvas is filled all the way to photo. Use glue to seal top of papers as well.

4. Once dry, paint outer row of squares with white paint (minus corner squares). You will notice that as it begins to dry, the paint will crackle and show the darker papers underneath.

5. Rub Stamp pad on to surfaces in random places, then wipe dry with sponge or paper towel.
6. Emboss Metal Sheet with a chosen pattern from plate designs (I used ‘sun’) . Make sure you emboss on back side of foil) Punch out circle with Squeeze Punch, then cut in half with scissors. Apply to outer white painted border once paint is dry.
