make mine cake

Project By: Carol Wingert www.carolwingert.typepad.com Have you ever looked at pictures of special cakes and wondered if they were real? Could cakes with that much detail and dimension possibly be edible? You don't have to be a baker or a well-trained, super talented cake decorator to make a cake that will have everyone wondering if it's real. All you need are a few Fiskars tools, a round papier mache box, some coordinating papers, a few buttons and some three dimensional paper flowers. The end result? A cake that looks so edible, it has you wondering why there aren't any plates and dessert forks next to the picture. (Insert picture of completed cake)

Here are the steps to make your very own special cake: Step 1: Measure and cut paper with a Fiskars paper trimmer to fit around the outside bottom portion of a round papier mache box. The box I used is the smallest of three nesting boxes which I found at Michaels. It is 8" in diameter and one piece of cardstock covers the whole outside. Adhere the paper to the outside of the box.
Step 2: Place the box top face down on a coordinating piece of cardstock. Hold the top with one hand and carefully cut around the circle with a Fiskars craft knife. Adhere the cut circle to the box top. Step 3: Create a fancy edge to trim the side of the box top by using a Fiskars Apron Lace Border Punch and another coordinating paper. Cut enough strips to cover the entire edge of the box top. Glue in place.
Step 4: Use a Fiskars flower punch to create 3 layers of paper flowers. In my sample, I punched 2 black dot and 1 pink dot for each flower. Glue the layers together and then finish off with a 3 dimensional paper rose or other coordinating flower. Glue flowers in a pattern or randomly on the box top. Step 5: Add ribbon of your choice to the box top edge. Add buttons, if desired.
Step 6: Place the box lid on the box bottom and voila, you have cake! Consider some of these ideas: Complete all three boxes and stack them on each other to create a 3 layer cake. The bottom two boxes will need to be flat at the top but lavishly decorate the sides to coordinate with the smallest box which will sit on top. The coolest thing about these boxes is that they are totally usable for storing things. Imagine them in your studio, or maybe in your little girl's or granddaughter's bedroom...fun! Or, how about this? Line the inside of the box with baker's parchment and fill with some homemade cookies as a handmade gift for an awesome friend...you will be loved forever.
If you want some cake this summer but don't feel like heating up the house by turning on the oven, just turn to your Fiskars tooks and some of your paper stash...you will have everyone wondering when it's time to cut the cake! Supplies:
