Instructions
(Print version)
- From each of the four assorted blue prints cut one 9-1/2" x 8" piece for Flag background
- From Tan print cut one 17-1/2" x 5" piece. Cut a like piece of the fusible web and attach the web to the wrong side of the Tan print. Remove paper backing. Using the Pinking blade, cut four 17-1/2 x 1" wide strips.
- From Cranberry felt cut one 18" x 5" piece. Cut a like piece of the fusible web and attach the web to the wrong side of the Cranberry felt. Remove paper backing. Using the Pinking blade, cut four 18" x 3/4" wide strips for the outer border.
- From Blue & Gold star print cut the fabric into halves. From one half cut four 22" x 2-3/4" wide strips. Keep the other half of the print fabric for your backing.
- From Gold print cut one 8" x 8" square. Cut a like piece of the fusible web and attach the web to the wrong side of the Gold print fabric. Trace around star pattern, cut out and remove paper backing.
- From Denim felt, using Wave blade, cut one 4" x 4-1/2" piece.
- From Cranberry felt, using Wave blade, cut seven 12" x 5/8" strips. Cut up the seven strips into the following lengths: seven- 6-1/2", seven- 2-1/2", and seven- 2". From Sandstone felt, using Wave blade, cut six 12" x 5/8". Cut up the six strips into the following lengths: six 6-1/2", six 2-1/2", and six 2".
Assembly:
- Placing right sides together, stitch two pieces of the blue background blocks along the 8" edge. Repeat with the next 2 blocks. Press seams toward the darker fabric.
- Place background blocks right sides together and stitch along the longer edge to make a square. Press seams toward the darker side again.
- Cut a piece of fusible web approximately 8" x 7". Layer the 6-1/2" Cranberry wave strips and the 6-1/2" Sandstone strips together, butting them together. Set into place with a hot iron. Trim sides to 6-1/2" with Rotary Cutter & straight blade. Press this unit onto background about 3" from upper edge and overlapping next block by 2" to the right.
- Repeat step 3 for the next two flag sections. The second flag section should measure 2" and the third section should measure 1-1/2" wide.
- To form the waves in the Flag, drop the second section down one stripe, so Cranberry stripes butt up next to the Sandstone stripe, and so on. There should be three steps on the flag to form the wave.
Borders:
- From Tan print, cut a 5" x 18" piece of the fabric. Cut a piece of the fusible web the same size. Press the fusible web to the wrong side of the tan print. Remove paper backing and with a Pinking rotary blade cut into four 1" x 18" strips.
- Press Tan border strips onto the edge of the quilt, starting with the upper and lower edges, then the two side edges.
- Using the Cranberry felt strips (18" x 3/4" wide) stitch down on top of the tan print border approximately 1/2" from the edge of the quilt, using the same order as the tan border.
- Fuse the stars to the blue flag background and stitch with blanket stitch using gold thread to secure.
- Stitch the blue background fabric over the stripes of the flag on the left upper edge using either Blue thread or Monofilament thread.
- Fuse the stars over the various areas of the stripes of the flag and secure with blanket stitch using gold thread.
Quilting:
- Lay pressed blue and gold backing fabric right side down on a table and tape down with masking tape to hold taut for pinning.
- Lay batting over backing fabric. Center quilt top on batting right side up.
- Starting from center, pin the quilt top to the backing spacing pins evenly to avoid puckers and pleats when you quilt on your machine.
- Select a quilting design that appeals to you and is appropriate for the quilt. A small meander with stars would be most appropriate for this wall hanging.
Binding:
- Use the remaining blue and gold fabric strips to make binding for your waylaying by seaming the smaller edges together to form one long strip. Press the seams open to make less bulk in your binding. Press the binding in half with right sides out.
- Find a halfway point on the wall hanging to start attaching your binding. Leave a 4-inch strip hanging for finishing later.
- Using a 1/4" seam, sew to-1/2" of the first corner. Fold the fabric back and up, even with the right edge of the fabric. Bring it down again along side of the right edge until the fold is even with the upper edge.
- Sew along this edge 1/4" from edge to the next corner (remember to leave-1/2" from the edge) and repeat the steps in No. 3.
- To finish the binding, lay the two edges of the fabric strips together and fold back in order to butt the edges. Press and mark the press marks with pins, these will be your seam lines. Stitch and press out with fingers to flatten. Check that your binding lies flat, without puckers. If you are satisfied with the look, trim back the longer parts and stitch the remaining binding down to the quilt.
- Press the binding from the front very lightly, roll it over and pin to hold in place while you either hand or machine stitch in place. Embellish stars with buttons
- Another way to attach the binding is to just fold the extra fabric from the back forward, being certain that the edges all measure the same depth. Fold them over once and lay the finished edge on the front of the quilt and stitch into place. Miter the corners the same as you would with an applied binding.
- Last but not least, always put a label on your quilt. Include information such as: Made for, Made by, Date, and Pattern.
