rosette clutch

I've been admiring all the fashionable clutches that I see online or in stores lately... they are so trendy now! After searching for the perfect one I realized that I could easily just make it myself. I found some pretty Spring fabric and after stitching together decided it needed an extra touch. Using my Fiskars fabric shears I cut some strips of fabric and sewed together a rosette. So simple and stylish!

Instructions
(Print version)

1. Choose fabric for the outside of the clutch and the inside lining. Measure 8.5x9 and cut with rotary fabric cutter. If you want to add thickness to your clutch you can also add in a layer or two of felt or batting. I used one layer of felt cut to 8.5x9 and placed it between the bottom (back) layer of fabric and the lining. 2. With the right sides of the outside fabric facing each other, stitch the sides and bottoms of these pieces. Lay down the other pieces in this order (from bottom to top) - felt, inside fabric with the right side facing up, inside fabrice with the wrong side facing up, and more felt if you wish. Stitch together the sides and the bottom of these pieces. 3. With the right sides together, put the inside stitched bag into the outside stitched pieces. Cut a small piece of elastic and pin where you'd like it to go for the closure. Stitch the top of the bag, leaving a small space to flip it inside out. Pull the bag inside out and stitch the rest of the top closed. Add a button.
 4. To make the rosette use a scrap piece of fabric about 1.5 in wide. Trim one side with fabric shears. Sew a running stitch down the middle with the longest stitch your machine will do, making sure to leave a lot of thread at each end. Pull one of the end threads so that the fabric starts to bunch and tie a knot at the end of the thread so it doesn't ungather. Trim a circle out of fabric - this will be the base for your flower so it can be as big or small as you'd like. I made one that was about 2 in. Fold the gathered fabric in half where the stitches are and set it down on edge of the circle. Begin to stitch the gathered fabric down around the circle, moving it in as you go around. Add more gathered fabric if needed.
