clock wth appliqued hearts

Designer: Kendra McCracken One of the things I most enjoy doing is finding something that is made for a certain purpose and ignoring the "rules" by using it in a different way. I recently found this clock/photo cube in a store. While it would have been perfectly nice to pop a couple of photos in the frame openings and set it on an office desk, I thought with some fabric panels and a few appliqued hearts, it would be perfectly pretty for display in a home.

Instructions
(Print version)
1. I started by creating frames to cover each side of the cube. Using my Desktop Rotary Trimmer, I cut squares equal to the size of each side of the cube from patterned paper.
2. To create the opening in the frames, I cut a piece of scrap chipboard equal to the size of the opening. I then divided both the chipboard and the back side of the patterned paper squares into 4 equal sections.
3. Creating a perfectly aligned frame is easy when you layer the chipboard square on the back side of the patterned paper square and align the lines on the chipboard with those on the patterned paper. Trace around the chipboard square, cut that section out of the paper, and you're left with a frame. Use a strong adhesive to adhere these to the cube.
4. I used the Fiskars Circle Cutter to create the opening for the that panel that housed the clock.
 5. Since the appliqued hearts were to be small, I didn't want to deal with the frustration of trying to sew them and then turn them. Instead, I used the Hearts Shape Template to cut a heart for each opening from thin chipboard. I layered quilt batting on top of the chipboard hearts, followed by the fabric, cut slightly larger than the chipboard heart. The excess fabric is then pulled to the back of the heart and taped in place.
6. Embellish the hearts as desired with stitching, beads, and small scraps of fabric. 7. Cut a piece of chipboard to fit each frame opening. Layer quilt batting on top of this, followed by the fabric cut slightly larger than the chipboard. Before pulling the excess fabric to the back of the chipboard, hand stitch the hearts to the center of the fabric squares. After preparing the fabric panels, they can be put in place.
8. Use the new Effervescense Border Punch to make a border around the top of the cube. A strip of contrasting fabric, frayed along the edges, finishes off the cube
