Car Seat Organizer

Designer: Katrina Simeck

If you’re like me, you could probably put a “taxi” sign on the top of your car. It seems like we’re constantly on the go…school, sporting events, shopping, etc. Of course, that means having lots of odds & ends in the car – magazines, ipods, sale flyers. Having a simple organizer to hang from the back of the seat helps keep all the car-clutter contained (and it’s super cute, too!)…

Instructions (Print version)

1. Use your Fiskars Softgrip® No. 8 Bent Scissors to trim a piece of fabric (I used denim) to approximately 16” x 36”. Fold in half & cut along fold so that you have 2 pieces of fabric that are 16” x 18”.
2. Trim a piece of coordinating fabric (I used patterned corduroy) to 8” x 16”. Fold down upper edge and sew (it helps to iron this seam before sewing). Pin along lower edge of denim to form a pocket.
3. Trim another piece of coordinating fabric to 8” x 6.5”. Fold all sides in 0.5”. Iron & stitch. Pin to denim. This will form a small pocket.

4. Stitch to denim along sides & bottom edge of small pocket (I used a zig-zag stitch).
5. Pin your large pieces of denim together, right sides facing. Machine stitch around all edges, leaving a small opening. This step will adhere your large pocket- you’ll be stitching through the denim and corduroy.
6. Turn project right side out. Use the stuffing tool in the Fiskars 12-in-1 Sewing Multi Tool to help in the corners! Iron all edges so that seams lay flat.
7. Stitch a “tube” from coordinating fabric to create a handle for your organizer. The size of this will be dependent on the configuration of your headrest, and how far you want the organizer to hang.

8. Machine stitch to upper edge of organizer (don’t worry about your stitching showing!).

9. Use one of your favorite Fiskars Squeeze Punches to punch a template from paper. I chose the That’s Amore punch. Pin template to felt, and cut out using Fiskars Non-Stick No 5 Scissors.
10.  Hand stitch to each of the handles, adding a button if desired.

Now you’re ready to hang this handy organizer over the back of a seat, fill it up with all sorts of useful things, and hit the road. Happy travels!
