Card class with Stacey KingmanClick image to enlarge Designer: Stacey Kingman http://staceykingman.typepad.com Don’t you just love Summer School? In today’s class we will focus on two of my absolute favorite, never-put-them-away Fiskars tools – Squeeze Punches and Texture Plates. We’ll start with a fun, versatile design that utilizes five punches. Although this card doesn’t look all that simple, it is both simple and quick because the tools do all the work. But we will definitely not stop there. We’ll take the basic card design and step it up by adding lots of texture and detail with Texture Plates, a Paper Crimper, and Adhesive Foam. Again, the card will look much more involved than it really is because adding a few tools will make all the difference – they make all the details so easy. For our third card, we’ll go back to the basic card and create a variation – it will be the same quick card, but we’ll create a different look just by changing the papers. There’s no homework in this class, but when we are finished with these three cards, you won’t want to stop, so feel free to assign yourself all the homework you want! Difficulty rating
Instructions (Print version) Basic Card Instructions: 1. Cut solid cardstock to 8 ½” X 7”, score at 3 ½”so that the card folds in half and is 8 ½” tall and 3 ½” wide. 2. Cut patterned paper to 8 ¼” X 3 ¼”. It should fit just inside the front panel with a very thin border. 3. Punch 1 ½” X 3 ¼”cardstock with the Threading Water Border Punch and adhere 1” from the bottom of the card. 4. Cut another piece of patterned paper to 2 ½” X 3 ½”, adhere above punched border piece. 5. Cut neutral cardstock to 4 ¾” X 2 ½”, round the two upper corners with the Around the Corner Squeeze Punch, adhere in the center of the card. 6. Punch two flowers with the XL Seal of Approval Squeeze Punch, cut about ¼ of one off. Adhere the full one below the neutral cardstock panel, and adhere the partial one at the top, so that it will appear to overlap the edge of the design as shown. 7. Punch three Large Mint Condition leaves, adhere. 8. Punch two Medium Round ‘n Round circles, adhere inside flowers, cutting the top one to fit in the cut flower. 9. Adhere a rub-on sentiment (I combined alphabet rub-ons from several leftover sets for a funky look) on the blank piece.
Add a few tools: 1. Cut the same papers and sizes for your second card. The design stays the same, but we’ll add some great embossed detail before adhering any of the pieces. Lightly ink each piece on the edges. 2. Adhere your 8 ¼” X 3 ¼” patterned paper to the front. Before adhering the smaller piece, use the Compact Stamp Press to stamp the harlequin pattern onto it with brown ink.
3. Emboss the punched border piece and the punched leaves and flowers with Texture Plates from the Assortment II Pack. Lightly inking these pieces with a subtle distressing ink will emphasize the beautiful texture you have added with your tools. 4. If you would like to add machine stitching to your card, this is a good time to do it. Stitch around the border of the card, then add some zig-zags to the sentiment panel. 5. Crimp your flower centers with the Paper Crimper, ink, and adhere to the flowers. Using the 1/16” Eyelet Setter, punch four holes in the flower centers to resemble the holes of a button. Sew thread through the holes. Adhere the leaves to the card front (if you are sewing on your card, add some stitches to the leaves now). Adhere the flowers with Adhesive Foam for even more dimension. 6. For the sentiment, I printed a quote on cardstock. I set the line spacing at 1.5 and cut the words with my Desktop Rotary Trimmer. I always use the glue feature on the Tool Taxi to adhere small word strips and it works perfectly here. You could also handwrite or stamp your sentiment or use rub-ons like we did on the basic card. ![]() 7. Since this card is a special one (Wait – aren’t they ALL special? Of course they are.), we’ll finish the inside as well. The inside will echo the front panel, although we’ll soften the colors a bit so the front panel will still be the star of the show. Cut two 8 ¼” X 3 ¼” pieces of patterned paper, adhere to the inside panels. 8. Create a stamped piece like the one on the front with the harlequin pattern, adhere to the right inside panel. 9. Cut a 4 ¾” X 2 ½” piece, round the corners at the top, and adhere over the stamped piece. Machine stitch the pieces. 10. Create a flower and leaves using Squeeze Punches, Texture Plates, and Paper Crimper for the inside. Adhere with regular flat adhesive, not foam. 11. Stamp sentiment on the message panel, leaving plenty of space for a handwritten note.
Basic Card Variation: 1. Do everything you did on the basic card, but use different papers. I stitched on this card, but otherwise kept it quite simple with the punches. It doesn’t really look simple, but you know it is! 2. Make more cards! Now you have all the tools you need (pun intended) to make a variety of basic or complex cards, as well as cards that fall in between...have fun!
A few tips for card makers: 1. When making a card, duplicate everything and make at least two. Leave the sentiment off and you’ll have a great blank card ready to go at a moment’s notice. I’m always so thankful for my 99%-complete card stash when I need a quick card. 2. Layer, layer, layer. Pile those pieces on your card and make lovely layers of paper details. Punches make fun layering so easy!. 3. Mistakes are just opportunities for embellishment. If you have an “ooops” moment, cover up your “mistake” with another leaf or flower. 4. When stitching on cards, remember to open the card before sewing. It is so easy to forget this and sew your cards closed! This leads us to Tip #3... 5. If you do sew your card closed (especially if you’re almost finished with it) sign the back and give it anyway! Or use it as the front panel for a new card. 6. Sign the back of the card with your name and the date. You’ve created a work of art!
