I have TONS of fabric scraps, and no real designated use for any of them.  So I’m always trying to come up with cute and crafty ways to use them for gifts.  My second niece is due in the fall, and I thought that these onesies would be a perfect way to use up a few girly-colored fabric scraps and create a cute gift for her!

  • Required supplies:
  • Round n' Round - Extra Large
  • No. 5 Micro-Tip® Scissors
  • Other: fabric scraps, white onesies, thread, iron-on fabric adhesive

Instructions (Print version)

1. Start by deciding what shape you’d like to appliqué to your baby onesie.  I sketched the bird with wing and flower petals out on paper and then trimmed them so I’d have a pattern.  The circle in the middle of the flower is the same size as an XL round n round punched circle.
2. Then trim your shape from paper to use as a pattern.
3. Iron fabric adhesive to wrong side of scrap paper – according to adhesive directions.
4. Trace shape onto right side of fabric very lightly using pencil.
5. Trim shape using soft touch micro tip scissors to get into nooks and crannies of any shape at all!
6. Iron appliqué patch onto onesie according to adhesive directions.
7. Using a small and very close together ziz-zag stitch – stitch around edge of appliqué.  I used similar colored thread as the fabric to coordinate better.  Make sure to reverse stitch at the beginning and end of appliqué to secure stitches before baby wears the onesie.
8. FOR THE BIRD: I ironed the “wing” part of the appliqué directly on top of the bird and then stitched.
9. FOR THE FLOWER: I ironed on all the petals first, then stitched, then ironed on the round center and then stitched that.
