Instructions for : beach tote
Start with a basic canvas tote bag. I purchase mine for under $5 from a large craft chain store.
Use the 45mm comfort grip rotary cutter, with acrylic ruler and mat, to cut strip of fabric long enough to wrap around the bag. You want the fabric to be cut 2 inches wider that you actually want it to be sewn on the bag. Measurements will vary depending on your bag.
Iron fabric and then fold 1 inch of width under along each long side (to ensure smooth edges once fabric is sewn to bag. If you want to layer fabric for your bag – as I did with the dot background with stripes on top, repeat process of cutting and ironing with top fabric, then pin and machine stitch to bottom fabric.
CREATE POCKET: Trim a 10 inch wide by 12 inch long piece of fabric for pocket. Fold and press both sides of the 10 inch width inwards by 2.5 inches on each side. Fabric should now measure 5 x 12. Along the 12 inch side, fold and press fabric in and under by 3 inches on each side. You have now formed the base of your 5x6 inch pocket. Machine stitch inseam along top edge only of pocket with a 1/8 inch inseam. Next pin pocket to desired place on fabric (fabric that will be wrapped around tote bag), and machine stitch around sides and bottom edges of pocket using a 1/8 inch inseam.
Pin fabric wrap to tote bag and machine stitch along edges to secure to bag.
Create flower embellishment for bag. Use the Ultra Shape Xpress circle template to trace and trim circles of various sizes from fabric. Layer circles and machine stitch around edge of smallest and top circle. Sew on a button center and then use fabric glue to attach to your tote bag.
